Public Procurement Pilot
Getting good food into schools, hospitals and care homes
What we noticed
The way local authorities buy food has the potential to support our producers while also getting healthy and sustainable meals to where they can have the biggest impact, such as schools, hospitals and care homes. Making this requires collaboration across the entire supply chain.
What we’re doing
We’re looking to develop a pilot project alongside Hertfordshire County Council, caterers and chefs that would demonstrate the potential of public procurement as a lever for change. This would begin a long-term relationship driving ambitious policy that prioritises local and organic food.
How it supports our shared vision
Providing healthy local food will improve public health and connect people more closely with where their food comes from. It will also keep more public spending circulating in the local economy, and provide reliable contracts that could help producers transition to sustainable practices.
