Reducing food waste through redistribution and composting

What we noticed

Huge amounts of food waste are generated through the food supply chain and in our homes. Hertfordshire already has food rescue, redistribution and composting organisations who reduce and repurpose this waste, but these efforts are largely isolated and unsupported.

What we’re doing

We’re looking to support existing food redistribution and composting initiatives by strengthening coordination, building infrastructure and improving logistics. We plan to pair this with a preventative approach that campaigns to cut waste at source and avoid dependence on surplus food.

How it supports our shared vision

Redistributing surplus food recovers value that would otherwise be lost, while composting regenerates local soils for future growing. Together, these actions cut food waste and emissions while shifting mindsets toward buying only what’s needed.
